Fresh Air Make Up

It is generally agreed that on the smaller boat there is no need to introduce fresh air into the air-conditioning system as the external door opening will allow sufficient fresh air into the boat to cover most scenarios.

The same assumption cannot be made for larger vessels and ships where the build-up of CO2 could occur without fresh air to displace it. Consequently, on these vessels fresh air is introduced into each habitable compartment. Air balance in and out of the vessel is achieved with the use of extract fans.

The fresh air has to be conditioned to the approximate internal design condition. In order that the AC load is not increased beyond sensible limits, the fresh air quantity is limited to typically 8 l/sec per person. A separate, small air handling unit is provided for the purpose of supplying conditioned fresh air into the vessel.
